Atomistic Simulations of Scratching and Cutting of Surfaces

Using classical molecular dynamics simulation, we will investigate the dynamic contact of two solids. For the materials steel (iron) and titanium, the processes of indentation, scratching and cutting will be simulated. In particular, we will characterize the following processes: the influence of defects such as grain boundaries or precipitates on the machining process; the plastic zone which forms under machining; the differences between an adhesive and a purely repulsive interaction between tool and work piece; as well as the wear.
