Phase Field Modeling of Transformation and Failure Mechanisms in the Vicinity of Surface

The martensitic phase transformation in metastable austenites and TRIP/TWIP steels is modeled by a continuum mechanical approach. Besides phase transformations, plastic deformations, failure mechanisms and the influence of temperature are considered. A phase field model is developed and numerically implemented within the Finite Element Method. Simulations are used to study both the influence and the interplay of the different phenomena like thermal or cyclic mechanical loading on the evolution of microstructure in the vicinity of machined surfaces.
