Biofilms on Microstructured Surfaces

The subject of the project is to obtain a deeper understanding of the interaction of microorganisms with microstructured metal surfaces. In the second phase of the collaborative research center CRC 926 not only the influence of the microorganisms through the structuring, but also the influence of the microorganisms on the surface itself will be under investigation. For this purpose, the surfaces are exposed in various bioreactor systems to different microorganisms. The adherent growth and biofilm formation are investigated by means of non-invasive analytical methods as well as with confocal laser scanning microscopy including FRAP experiments. Product formation will be characterized as a function of the structure of the surface used, with a priority for the production of antibiotics.
